Darker Than Fiction
was a typography brief set in university, asking to design the cover (front, back & spine) and the interior of the book for a collection of short stories by Marcus Bastel as if they were to be published by Penguin Books.
The stories all maintained a dark and ambiguous ambience throughout, which I felt very consumed and overwhelmed by. Focusing on visualising that emotion, I came up with a collage of a big wave swallowing up an entire frame and a hand suggesting someone drowning inside for the cover. I wanted my image making to contain a bit of roughness that would come from a non-digital process.
In terms of the interior, I wanted to have the readability of the text as the focal point of my design, so I tried to keep it simple and keep most of the decorative elements out. I kept the typefaces consistent to the cover of the book.
